Anyone in the Boston area is reading about Curt Schilling and other players talking about the need to shoot up with paid medication. Pain management is a tricky issue as it’s not an easy way to see objective and clear decisions with it as it’s very individual. I can’t speak on elite sport and what is the line that one should not cross, but my main feeling is that pain is the most important metric in sport. With concussions use to be though of as nothing more than a head injury, we are starting to see how important we are as health providers when working with human beings. Joints, muscles, and even emotions are all necessary things to protect. My feeling is that without recording and getting honest subjective information, we are not gong to learn. One book that I suggest coaches read is Pain Tracking, something that is revealing and should be part of any reporting system medically and performance.
