3 P’s of Training

Any good productive training program meets what I call the 3P criteria. Is what you are planning to do practical, personal and proactive?

  • Practical– Can you do it in the context of the time, facilities, equipment and personnel available? Does it fit within the context of the whole training program?
  • Personal– Does the training fit the person or are you trying to make the person fit the training?
  • Proactive – Do you have a plan and contingencies to fit situations you might encounter?

Apply the 3P criteria to your training and 99.9% of the time you will be spot on.

Vern is the Director of Gambetta Sports Training Systems. He has been the a conditioning coach for several MLS teams as well as the conditioning consultant to the US Men's World Cup Soccer team. Vern is the former Director of Conditioning for the Chicago White Sox and New York Mets. He has lectured and conducted clinics in Canada, Japan, Australia and Europe and has authored six books and over one hundred articles related to coaching and sport performance in a variety of sports. He has a BA in teaching with a coaching minor and an MA in Education with an emphasis in physical education from Stanford University.
