What are the real adaptations we need?

One of the key questions with evaluating a program are what metrics are important benchmarks in a good program. The weekly strides some NFL/D1 programs use for fitness are not just workouts, but possible weekly assessments of fitness. Perhaps the splitting the runs to two sets or comparing the recovery HR will be indicators of recharging against fatigue. If one had to report weekly or monthly updates in conditioning to a sport coach what would one show? Volume of tempo? In-season is a hard time and I think I would share HRV at weekly intervals (NFL and D1 Football) and the weekly fitness run after competition that is often done. Track is a different animal, but fitness is not speed endurance so one needs to look to see what is targeted throughout the season for benchmarks of success.
