    Experience vs Expertise

    0
By Mike Young on April 23, 2008 Mike Young's Blog

The results of tonight’s Pennsylvania Democratic primaries are in. Hillary won the state by over 10 percentage points giving her justification to stay in the blood bath that was the Democratic primaries. I bring this up only because one of the central talking points of both the Clinton and Obama camps is the value of experience vs. expertise. Clinton says experience is needed. Obama says expertise is more important. Obviously in this case, both have some level of experience and expertise but the difference of opinion on the matter makes for good water cooler fodder. In coaching, the same arguments are likewise made. Older coaches might discount a younger coach because they lack experience. At the same time the fresh young go-getter coach might take jabs at the old school, out-of-date methods of the older coach. Recent research says that at the very least, there is no conclusive answer to the question of ‘which is more important?’ The experts and the experienced both make mistakes….just different kinds of mistakes. If anything, the question to the answer appears to be someone who is an expert in their field. Obviously in the ideal world, you don’t have to choose and can find someone who has both experience and expertise.
