Help the Victims of Katrina

The U.S. Government has issued a presidential disaster declaration in the wake of what’s been described as the worst natural disaster in the history of the country.

As someone who has lived and loved Louisiana for the past 4 years, this disaster has hit particularly close to home. I cannot describe how overwhelming this whole disaster has been. My city, Baton Rouge, is only 50 miles to the West of New Orleans. Fortunately, the damage we took was nothing compared to those cities on the Gulf Coast.

Baton Rouge has essentially become a refugee camp for New Orleans area families that were displaced by the disaster. Thousands of people have lost their jobs, their homes, and worst of all their loved ones. The devastation is so overwhelming that it will literally take years to recover from. Many of these people have come to my city without any of the necessities of life (food, shelter, medical care, etc.). These people need our help.

According to Michael D. Brown, Under-Secretary of Homeland Security for Emergency Preparedness and Response:

“Cash donations are especially helpful to victims, they allow volunteer agencies to issue cash vouchers to victims so they can meet their needs. Cash donations also allow agencies to avoid the labour-intensive need to store, sort, pack and distribute donated goods. Donated money prevents, too, the prohibitive cost of air or sea transportation that donated goods require.”
